dog books

It’s no secret that we love dogs, but did you know we also love reading? Our staff at Doggy Brace voted on their favorite dog books and we wanted to share them with you as well! We promise you’ll love these, you’ll cry at these, and you’ll want to read them time and time again. Here’s our list of books that every dog owner needs to read.

‘London’s Number One Dog-Walking Agency’

This book is for everyone’s inner dog-walker. If you’ve ever wanted to leave your job and spend the day with the animals you love, then you can live that dream through Kate MacDougall, the protagonist in this delightful read.

London’s Number One Dog-Walking Agency,” is a real story! It’s a memoir by Kate MacDougall and tells how she left her job at Sotheby’s to pursue a career as a dog walker. Her parents are on board, but her partner is. MacDougall dove right in and created a wonderful story in the process, told through the eyes of the dogs she walks.

The memoir is a coming-of-middle-age story. Each chapter tells an anecdote about one of the dogs in their care and how the plight of the dog relates to Kate’s evolving story. Overall, it’s extremely endearing and a wonderfully fun read.

‘Griffin’s Heart: Mourning Your Pet With No Apologies’

Switching gears, not all dog books are happy ones. The sad reality of being a dog parent is knowing that, one day, you’ll have to help them cross the rainbow bridge. This book is for owners who are preparing for that moment, or who are mourning their beloved dog.

Griffin’s Heart: Mourning Your Pet With No Apologies,” by Reagan Pasternak is a book that will make you cry. That’s not a bad thing — it helps you get through the mourning process in a healthy way. It’s not a pain that you should dismiss — you should feel it, because it just shows how much you adored your dog.

This book honors that pain provides a series of stories, advice, and journal prompts to help guide you on that path. While it can be a little preachy, it can also be helpful for first-time mourners. We recommend it for yourself, or for a gift to help a loved one through hard times.

‘The Natural Dog’

This book is visually gorgeous! It’s not a fiction book and isn’t great for veteran dog owners — it’s all about caring for your dog — but the photos and illustrations are what really makes it special.

The Natural Dog: A Complete Guide for Caring Dog Lovers is the perfect gift for first-time dog owners. It has lots of helpful information with a ton of practical tips. The bulk of the book includes behavior, training, safety, walking, and more. If you’re interested in natural dog care as well — such as natural raw diets — this book is for you!

Even if you’re not into this type of book, it may be worth picking up and passing on if you ever get your kids a puppy or a family member if they need a little extra advice with their pup.

‘Marley & Me’

It wouldn’t be a dog book list without mentioning the infamous “Marley & Me” by John Grogan. We all know this heartwarming and heart-wrenching story about a rambunctious Labrador named Marley.

What you may not know is that it’s a memoir that follows Grogan, his family, and of course, Marley. The story starts with John and Jenny, a young couple very much in love. They adopt Marley, not knowing he would grow up into quite a handful. As the book’s summary says, “[Marley] crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women’s undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewellery.”

Marley is certainly a handful! Throughout it all, they never gave up on Marley. The three of them became a family and loved each other unconditionally throughout all of life’s ups and downs. We won’t spoil the end if you don’t already know it, but keep tissues nearby!
